Holy Week and Easter Services 2019
Maundy Thursday 18th April
Upper Room Meal 6.00 – 7.30pm
We recall Jesus’ last supper with his friends with a simple ritual ‘agape’ – a shared meal, with words that recall his timeless actions and teaching about love. Please bring ‘Mediterranean’ food to share – a small amount of flatbread (pitta, tortilla, focaccia) and one or two accompaniments – olive oil to dip, olives, houmus, tahini, tabbouleh, feta, stuffed vine leaves, salad, cous cous, etc – and drinks.
Good Friday 19th April
Way of the Cross 10.30am-12.00pm
This is our version of the ancient practice of remembering Jesus’ last journey – in a walking meditation across Leith Links. It’s a shared event with our friends at the L’Arche Community. We start at the L’Arche house – The Skein, 18 Claremont Park (hot cross buns served in the back garden!) And slowly make our way across the Links, stopping to remember parts of the story and hear short reflections by members of our communities. The last two stations are at St James, where there will be a hearty soup lunch for everyone.
Good Friday Gospel Singing
7.30pm – 8.45pm
Singing is a deeply human response to life’s emotional and spiritual joys and hardships. Following last year’s memorable and uplifting Good Friday Gospel Night, this is another chance to come and sing in harmony together. Drawing on powerful and well-known songs from gospel, soul and folk music, this communal experience is a chance to join your voice with others in songs of struggle, celebration, lament and hope – responding to the Easter story, and to our own experiences of life’s journey. No singing experience necessary. Come by yourself, or bring a friend or two – a warm welcome awaits. The event will last just over an hour but no need to hurry away afterwards. Bring your own voice-sustaining drinks, of any kind you prefer. Info/Register at Eventbrite (Free)
Holy Saturday 20th April 10.00am
Transformation and Singing Rehearsal
Come if you can, even for a short time, to help prepare the church for our Easter service. We will be creating new murals so many hands will make light work! We also need lots of greenery and flowers to decorate the church…. Bring whatever you can. Also, the Music Group will be practising the songs for Sunday – and everyone is invited to join in with learning the songs.
Easter Sunday 21st April 10.30am
Festival Communion Service for all ages
The great feast day is celebrated here, as usual, with much singing – and a little something special afterwards. Please note the early start time, to give us time to gather and prepare.
