We have a full-time Rector, a part-time Director of Music, a non-stipendiary Associate Priest, and a volunteer group of trustees, the Vestry, who oversee the life of the community as a charity registered in Scotland.

Our Rector is Steve Butler.
Steve returned to St James in October 2013 having previously been our Rector from 1999 to 2008. Brought up and schooled in Glasgow, Steve went to Edinburgh University to study Psychology. He then became a graduate trainee Chartered Surveyor before training for ordination at Trinity College, Bristol in the mid-1980s. After completing his training, Steve embarked on a 10-year career in music – as a performer, recording producer and publisher. He was ordained in Edinburgh in 1997 and served his curacy in the Diocese, before becoming Rector of St James in 1999. From 2011-13 he was Associate Minister at St John’s, Dumfries. Our Director of Music is Suzanne Butler.
Suzanne is an experienced musician, song-writer and facilitator. She is Event Team Manager for Edinburgh music charity Fischy Music who work in schools and churches all over the UK. She sees her church role as one of encouraging collaboration, creativity and team-work – making the most of the many musical gifts of congregation members, and providing a confident lead where required, especially in special and seasonal events at St James. Our Associate Priest is Jolyon Mitchell.
Jolyon specialises in Religion, Violence and Peacebuilding with particular reference to the arts and media at the University of Edinburgh, where he is Professor of Communications, Arts and Religion. He is also President, TRS UK (UK’s national association for Theology and Religious Studies) and Director of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues (CTPI).
